Deccan Chargers singe Knight Riders

A change of captain doesn’t seem to be working for Kolkata Knight Riders, who were trounced by Deccan Chargers in their IPL opener here on Sunday. Herschelle Gibbs (46) and Rohit Sharma (32) put on an unbeaten 69-run partnership after the RP Singh-led Deccan attack had restricted Knight Riders to just 101. Chasing 102, the Hyderabad-based team began well, but lost two quick wickets. Adam Gilchrist and VVS Laxman were both back in the pavilion when the score was 35. However, Gibbs and Rohit made sure there were no further calamities as they knocked off the runs in 13.1 overs.
Earlier, the nearly 20 overs of KKR innings wore the look of a Test match. Batting first after winning the toss, presumably to avoid the swirling winds that set in late in the day, KKR lost their way.
The boundaries were brought in because of the rain and the game began late because of a problem with the lights. RP Singh (4/22) had new captain Brendon McCullum caught down the leg side for just 1. Chris Gayle skied a catch on 10. Sourav Ganguly’s difficult times continued and he faced 12 balls for just one run before gliding Harmeet Singh to slip.
From there, it was always going to be an uphill task.
